Find the Real Source of Your Hip Pain and Get Back to Moving Freely

Are you experiencing pain in your hips?

Few joints shape your day as quietly and completely as your hips. They carry you through every step, every stair, and every time you rise from a chair, so when they begin to hurt, the discomfort touches almost everything you do. With hip pain physical therapy in Austin, TX from Move Empower Concierge Physical Therapy, a Doctor of Physical Therapy comes to your home or office, determines exactly where your hip pain is coming from, and builds a plan to resolve it so you can move through your day without hesitation.

Where Is Your Hip Pain Coming From?

One of the first things we do is pinpoint the location and behavior of your pain, because where you feel it tells us a great deal about its source. Pain felt deep in the groin or across the front of the hip often points toward the joint itself, including the cartilage and the labrum, and it is the pattern most associated with hip osteoarthritis, though front-of-hip pain can also come from the tight hip flexors and weak glutes that long hours of sitting at a desk tend to produce. Pain along the outer edge of the hip, especially when you climb stairs, lie on your side at night, or stand for long periods, frequently traces back to the gluteal tendons and the bursa rather than the joint, a condition known as lateral hip pain. Pain that settles behind the hip in the buttock, particularly when it travels down the leg, can involve the deep hip rotators or nerves referred from the lower back.

Sorting out which of these is driving your symptoms is a job for a careful, hands-on evaluation rather than guesswork, which lets us treat the true source instead of chasing the ache from one spot to another. It is also worth knowing that hip pain is not distributed evenly, because anatomical and hormonal differences leave women more prone to certain hip tendon problems than men. Chronic stress can quietly compound the problem, because sustained high cortisol gradually breaks down the muscles that stabilize the hip, an effect that is especially pronounced after menopause.

Common Hip Pain Conditions We Treat

Hip pain spans a wide range of conditions, and the right treatment depends on which one you have. The list below is not comprehensive, but it covers the sources of hip pain we help our Austin patients resolve most often:

  • Hip osteoarthritis, the gradual wearing of joint cartilage that leads to stiffness and deep aching
  • Gluteal tendinopathy and greater trochanteric pain syndrome, felt as pain along the outer hip
  • Hip bursitis, an inflammation of the fluid-filled sacs that cushion the joint
  • Hip labral tears and femoroacetabular impingement, which can cause catching, pinching, or groin pain
  • Hip flexor and groin strains brought on by athletics, overuse, or sudden movements
  • Piriformis syndrome and deep gluteal pain that may radiate into the buttock or down the leg
  • Post-surgical hip pain, including recovery after a hip replacement or arthroscopy

If none of these labels quite matches what you are feeling, that is not a problem, because your evaluation exists to name the source precisely rather than leave you guessing.

When Hip Pain Starts Showing Up in Your Knee and Back

The hip sits at the center of nearly every movement your lower body makes, so when it stops working well, the effects rarely stay contained. A painful hip changes the way you walk, and that altered gait quietly shifts extra load onto your knee, your lower back, and even the opposite hip. This is how a single hip problem can grow into two or three separate areas of discomfort over time, and it is one of the clearest reasons not to simply wait it out.

Addressing the hip early protects everything connected to it, because once it regains its strength and control, the surrounding joints stop compensating and their aches often ease on their own. This is also why treating hip pain in your home matters so much. We can watch how you actually walk across your living room, rise from your own couch, and climb your own stairs, and those everyday movements reveal far more than a clinic room ever could.

How We Treat Hip Pain in Your Home

After a thorough evaluation, your therapist builds a plan around the specific source of your pain, which may combine several proven approaches:

  • Manual therapy to improve joint mobility, ease tight and guarded muscles, and reduce pain
  • Therapeutic exercise to rebuild the strength and stability your hip needs, with particular attention to the glutes
  • Dry needling to calm irritated muscles and trigger points around the hip and pelvis
  • IASTM to address the soft tissue restrictions that limit your movement
  • Shockwave therapy to stimulate healing in stubborn tendon problems such as gluteal tendinopathy and greater trochanteric pain syndrome
  • Blood flow restriction training to build strength safely when loading the joint is painful

Many people arrive having already been offered corticosteroid injections, and while those can play a role, they often provide only temporary relief and carry trade-offs worth understanding. Our aim is to strengthen and stabilize the hip so your relief lasts, and for conditions like gluteal tendinopathy and hip bursitis, skilled hands-on manual therapy can make a substantial difference. Because lasting relief comes down to strength, we also coach you through targeted strengthening done with proper form, the kind of glute and hip work that rebuilds real stability rather than only quieting the ache.

Across more than two decades of practice, we have treated thousands of patients and worked in hundreds of different homes, offices, and gyms throughout the Austin area. That range matters with hip pain, because the same diagnosis can look completely different from one person to the next, and our 20+ years of experience lets us read those differences quickly and build a plan that fits the person in front of us rather than a textbook.

If you are not certain which of these fits your situation, identifying it precisely is exactly what your evaluation is designed to do.

Hip Pain Changes How You Move Long Before You Decide to Address It

Hip pain rarely announces itself all at once. It often begins as a small catch when you climb stairs or a dull ache after a long walk, and over time it quietly reshapes the way you sit, stand, and move. Many people adjust without realizing it, shortening their stride or favoring one side, and by the time the pain is impossible to ignore, the habits built around it have often made the underlying problem worse.

What makes hip pain especially tricky is that it is so frequently misread. The hip is a deep, complex joint surrounded by powerful muscles, tendons, and bursae, and pain there can arise from any of them or be referred from the lower back entirely. Getting an accurate answer is the first and most important step, and it is where our approach to hip pain physical therapy in Austin begins.

Studies Show Physical Therapy Works for Hip Pain

The evidence behind this approach is strong. The 2017 hip osteoarthritis clinical practice guidelines published in the Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy recommend that physical therapists use manual therapy together with strengthening, flexibility, and endurance exercise to reduce pain and improve mobility in people with hip pain and mobility deficits.

In other words, active, hands-on care backed by targeted exercise is not just an alternative to waiting and resting, but a first-line treatment supported by strong evidence, and the progress you make continues to serve you long after your sessions end. At Move Empower Concierge Physical Therapy, that evidence-based, root-cause approach shapes every plan we create.

I am so grateful for the care I have gotten from Eric. My hip pain has been a constant for a few years now, and I had tried three different PT's before Finding Move Empower. The other models weren't affective for my condition (gluteal tendonitis and lower back pain) as they seemed too heavy on resting, stretching and mobility without focusing on the strength component. I was so debilitated by the time I started working with him that I felt hopeless and tired out from all the effort to get better! Eric approached my issue from many fronts- core strengthening, functional work and strength training. He is also very gentle in holding me accountable and is so positive and encouraging. After much focused work, I am finally back to living a fuller life and working out again, putting on muscle and having a strategy to keep my hips as healthy so I can! He is a godsend and I wish I had found him sooner!

I am so happy I called Eric with Move Empower Concierge Physical Therapy. I had been suffering from bilateral hip pain for several months and it was dramatically affecting my active lifestyle. Pain with sitting, walking, and exercise. I had tried chiropractic, however, the relief was short-term and on top of that my chiropractor suggested I may need Total Hip Replacement!! Not only did that scare me, but it was the last thing I wanted. My husband and daughter had both worked with Eric of Move Empower in the past and had successful outcomes getting them back to their active lifestyles, so I decided to reach out. During the first session, I knew I had made a good decision. Eric performed a thorough exam and explained that I did NOT need surgery, but instead, the culprit was likely a hip tendon, not arthritis like my chiropractor said. Within a couple of visits, I was seeing significant progress: less pain and better toleration of my daily 2-3 mile walk. What I really appreciated about Eric was his mix of treatments. From manual therapy, and dry needling, to the specific exercise prescription it all worked so well together. I hadn’t had that type of experience anywhere else. Oh, and did I mention he comes to you-yep their mobile! I highly recommend Move Empower Concierge PT if you’re struggling with pain or injury keeping you away from the activities you love to do.

I sought out Eric at Move Empower after many years of 'dealing' with chronic pain in my hip following the birth of my 3rd child almost 6 years ago. Although I felt the pain was bearable, it wasn't until my husband pointed out how often I was missing out on family bike rides, hikes, and games of catch that I realized how much my discomfort was impacting my life. As a former athlete and someone who has taken pride in keeping in shape, part of my hesitation with therapy was the notion that I would be looked down on for not taking better care of myself. Although my family was active, I had let caring for myself lapse, and found my muscles embarrassingly weak. My attempts to strengthen on my own were met with even more pain, and I knew I had to do something to change. When I first met with Eric, he managed to be both empathetic and matter-of-fact. He concisely explained where he suspected the issues were occurring and provided me with manageable goals to achieve between sessions. As we worked through my initial pain and areas of weakness, we found additional issues begin to emerge. I was impressed that Eric was able to pause and backtrack his initial treatment goals and work through these new complications. He continued to be both motivating and patient with my progress, even when I was falling behind due to holiday schedules and family illnesses. I really liked that Eric was able to come to me rather than having to visit a clinic-based setting. Not only did it makes things easier on me as a homeschooling parent, but also created a more personalized feeling. Eric was able to use items around my house to demonstrate exercises and provide me with the tools necessary to carry out my therapy exactly the way that he instructed. I truly found this to be the best motivator, as I would walk past the step where he had instructed me on lunges, or rearrange the pillow that he had used to demonstrate resting between leg lifts and it would remind me to complete my targeted goals for the day. I would highly recommend Eric at Move Empower to anyone hoping to improve their quality of life by getting back to the things they love to do. For me, that means more time spent doing all the things that my very active family enjoys doing.

After my hip replacement in January I had home-health physical therapy for three weeks and made a lot of progress. I started out patient therapy with a different group a week after the in-home therapy was over. I had two sessions a week apart. It took me about 4 days to recover to the point I was before each session, so I decided to try to find Eric Finger. I had had PT with him a few years earlier and he had helped me a lot then. I Googled him and found Move Empower. Even though he doesn't take insurance, I decided if he could help me be able to hike with my partner and friends in Arizona the first week of May, it would be worth it and it was! I started working with Eric the first week in April. At that time, the farthest I was walking was around the block. When I went to Arizona I hiked 3 1/2 miles in Sabino Canyon without any problem and could have gone further! After not being able to walk for more that about a quarter of a mile the entire year before my surgery, I was thrilled. I liked that he came to the house and was totally focused on helping me. He listened to my concerns and goals, evaluated my strengths and weaknesses, and designed a program to fit my needs, re-evaluating and adjusting as needed. He also massaged muscles that were tight and did some dry needling; both were great and helpful. I've had six different physical therapists over the years (I'm 69), some not so good. Eric, however, is excellent.

Eric is competent and professional. If you hurt, get a consultation to see if he can help you. After two sessions (plus assigned exercises), my chronic hip pain (from a tear of unknown origin high in the gluteus medius) went from a constant aggravation to almost unnoticeable during the day. After another month of exercises plus sublingual arnica (advised by my GP), I only feel it occasionally at night. Now, my husband is seeing him for foot pain.

Eric is amazing, literally the best PT. He helped me through two total hip replacements and I’m now in the best shape of my life because of his great work. After working with Eric, not only am I so much stronger than when we first started, but he has helped my confidence level in showing me I CAN do things I used to love to do, and that I really am much stronger than I thought. Eric is incredibly attentive with his clients and you can see he truly cares about helping you. I really looked forward to every appointment because I was seeing actual improvement and results! If you're looking for someone that is really knowledgable and truly cares about helping relieve your pain and getting you feeling stronger, look no further than MOVE! (Plus, you can't beat the added convenience that he will come to your home or gym!) Because Move Empower is concierge, Eric is extremely accommodating and able to work with your schedule.

Hip Pain FAQs

Even when arthritis is part of the picture, physical therapy can make a meaningful difference, because much of the pain and stiffness of hip osteoarthritis responds well to improved strength and mobility. The current clinical guidelines recommend it as a primary treatment, and many patients reduce their pain and delay or avoid more invasive options.

Both are possible, and the decision is ultimately made with your physician. Many people who worry they are headed for a hip replacement find substantial relief through strengthening and hands-on care first, and for those who do have surgery, arriving stronger beforehand and rehabilitating carefully afterward tends to lead to a smoother recovery.

Outer hip pain in particular often worsens at night, because lying on your side compresses the very tendons and bursa that are already irritated. This is a common and treatable pattern, and part of your plan may include practical adjustments to how you position yourself for sleep along with exercises that address the underlying irritation.

This will depend primarily on the type of condition and the length of time the condition has been present. A chronic or hypersensitive condition can have more sensations than an acute injury.

A good plan is dosed to your tolerance, so while some exercises may produce mild, temporary soreness as you build strength, treatment should not leave you in significant pain. Your therapist adjusts the load based on how you respond, using clear guidelines so you always know what is normal and what is too much.
