Mobile Physical Therapy: Blood Flow Restriction Training

Blood Flow Restriction Training, known as BFRT, is a safe and effective method to build muscle size and strength as well as improve cardiovascular function for people of all ages and abilities.

Blood Flow Restriction Training helps with recovery from injury or surgery by being able to work muscles with significantly less intensity while still reaping the benefits similar to high-intensity resistance training. BFRT provides an opportunity to still stress muscle with low-level exercises when body weight or weight lifting exercises are contraindicated or not tolerated. In layman’s terms, BFRT is a means to rehab faster, recover sooner, and get back to doing the things you love!

During your BFRT mobile physical therapy visit…

One of our concierge physical therapists will place a cuff around either your arm or thigh. This cuff will be set to a specific pressure determined by our PTs. You wear the cuff for short periods and work on low intensity exercises. The cuff restricts blood flow, which mimics what happens during a high intensity workout.

With your blood flow restricted, these simple exercises will be more difficult, causing your body to treat the low intensity workouts as if they were high intensity; basically, we trick your muscles into feeling as if they are doing a more strenuous workout! These are great for people who are unable to complete more difficult exercises due to injuries. Blood Flow Restriction Training has been proven to increase muscle mass, strength, AND endurance for our Home Health PT patients!

Don’t worry, we understand this can sound kind of scary. Think of it as if you’re doing easy exercises with a blood pressure cuff on! Our mobile physical therapists will be there with you every step of the way to monitor your progress and help you get all the benfits out of your BFRT workouts!

Benefits of BFRT:

Ready to feel better all around?

Hear what our patients have to say:

I started working with Eric at Move Empower PT because I had chronic knee pain in my right side that was preventing me from doing anything other than walking--even going down stairs hurt. The muscles in my right leg had started shrinking as I avoided using my knee. This affected everything, and I felt hopeless about my situation, and wondered if I would ever be able to feel strong and active in my body again (and if my legs would ever look the same size again).

Eric identified the issues in my knee, and suggested Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) training as a part of my recovery (along with manual therapy, at home exercises, and continued mobility work).

After a month of doing BFRT 2 times a week I have noticed so many benefits. I can see a profound increase in the size of my leg muscles on the right side - the visual difference between my two sides is decreasing. Additionally, I've seen consistent and explosive gains in strength, stability, and mind-muscle connection on my right side too. Everything from my running, weight lifting, core work, and cycling have benefited from the results of BFRT. I now pursue these activities with joy, knowing I won't be in pain afterwards.

I am so glad that I have added it to my regimen, and believe that it has been a huge part of my safe and successful return to the active life I love.

The Many Benefits of Blood Flow Restriction Training (BFRT)

Blood flow restriction training (BFRT) is an emerging exercise technique used by physical therapists and other healthcare professionals to maximize the benefits of exercise while minimizing the risk of injury. BFRT works by restricting blood flow to the muscles while lifting, allowing them to be pushed to their limit with less resistance. This technique has been found to produce significant gains in strength and muscle size, while also reducing recovery time. Explore below the many benefits of BFRT and how an Austin, TX mobile physical therapist can help you take advantage of this innovative training method at Move Empower Concierge Physical Therapy.

Increase muscle size and strength

BFRT works by restricting the flow of blood in certain parts of the body, which causes the muscles to be worked harder during exercise. This causes greater growth and strength in those muscles than traditional weight training. The end result is improved muscle size and strength without needing to lift heavy weights. A mobile physical therapist in Austin can provide specialized guidance and instruction on how to properly perform BFRT for best results.

Reduce loss of muscle definition after surgery

By applying pressure to a limb, BFRT allows you to safely increase intensity while limiting blood flow to the muscle. This helps maintain muscle mass, as well as increase strength and endurance in the affected area. It also can help reduce post-surgical swelling and pain, as well as improve overall range of motion.

Increase the amount of oxygen your body uses during workouts

BFRT can help your body use more oxygen when you exercise. By restricting the circulation of blood in certain areas of your body, the muscles are forced to work harder and demand more oxygen than normal. This can lead to increased endurance and muscle strength. BFRT can also reduce the risk of injuries and fatigue due to increased blood flow. As a result, oxygen is more efficiently used during workouts, leading to improved performance and recovery.

Decrease scar tissue and related pain

BFRT helps reduce swelling around the injured area and increases circulation, which can help reduce pain. BFRT also encourages collagen production in the area, leading to better tissue regeneration and overall healing. With regular practice, patients can expect less scar tissue and pain in the injured area.

Increase collagen creation in the body for strong bones, muscles, and tissues

Blood Flow Restriction Training (BFRT) is a great way to enhance the collagen-creation process. It involves using an elastic band or cuff to temporarily reduce the flow of blood to an injured area, allowing for more efficient healing and strengthening. BFRT encourages collagen production in muscles, tendons, and ligaments, resulting in stronger bones and muscles. Additionally, collagen improves skin health, enhances joint mobility and stability, and helps with overall body recovery.

BFRT FAQs

BFRT, or Blood Flow Restriction Training, is where a cuff is placed on your arm or thigh to create pressure and restrict blood flow. You then complete low intensity exercises with the cuff in place to trick your muscles into working as they would in a high intensity workout.

BFRT is beneficial for those that are unable to complete high intensity exercises due to injuries. Working with low intensity exercises and restricted blood flow, you will notice an increase in your muscle mass, strength, and endurance!

No! You may notice that your body feels different during these workouts or that your arms/legs change color a bit, but it does not hurt. Your skin will return to its normal color once the cuffs are removed. However, you may see a slight increase in the size of your limb for about 24 hours and may experience some muscle weakness and soreness — just like you would after a high intensity workout!

Everyone! BFRT is for anyone and everyone, but a quick consultation with your mobile physical therapist will determine if Blood Flow Restriction Training is right for you.
