What is IASTM?
Instrumented Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization is a technique that uses a wide variety of tools to detect and treat fascial restrictions due to soft tissue fibrosis, chronic inflammation, and degeneration. It is a valuable supplemental treatment to therapeutic exercise to improve range of motion, muscle strength, muscular recruitment.
How does it work?
Often, patients with soft-tissue injuries do not seek out physical therapy until the injuries have become chronic (weeks/months after injury). By this point, the body has completed most of its self-healing process. Scar tissue and adhesions are formed during this healing process, and can ultimately effect ROM and mobility.
The problem lies in the manner of how the scar tissue is laid down…its excessive and highly disorganized, almost acting like a glue between the tissues preventing proper lengthening and contracting of the affected muscles.
By introducing controlled microtrauma to affected soft tissue using IASTM, a local inflammatory response is stimulated, essentially kick starting the process of reabsorption and remodeling of the disorganized tissue into more organized, movement friendly, pattern.
Studies have shown clinical benefits of IASTM to include improvements in range of motion, strength and pain perception following treatment.
What conditions is IASTM used to treat?:
- Plantar fasciopathy
- Sprains and Strains
- Lumbar pain
- Cervical pain
- Post-operative muscle tightness
- Repetitive strain injuries, like Tennis and Golfer’s elbow
I was dealing with chronic hamstring injuries (tendinopathy) for over a year and was unable to jog/exercise without aggravating my pain. I had tried “Airrosti” therapy, pain medications and ice but the issue continued every time I tried to resume jogging. I had almost given up the idea of ever jogging again when I hurt my knee and started Physical Therapy with Eric Finger.
Eric was able to assist me in recovering from my knee and both hamstring injuries. The best thing about PT with Eric was his confidence in my ability to resume jogging and the professional guidance he provided in my journey back to health.
Eric was able to get me back to jogging in 12 visits and I am now able to jog a 5k.. pain free! My only regret is not starting therapy sooner! Thanks, Eric at Move Empower!A. Patton
